Network Upgrade – August 2008
Posted on July 1st, 2008 No commentsUpdate!!!:
In an effort to ensure that all of our customers are prepared for the re-ASN project, we are re-scheduling two maintenances that were previously scheduled for August 5th and August 7th. We are excited about the upcoming changes to our network and want to confirm that customers are prepared for this maintenance.Over the past six months QualityTech’s network architects have been planning and executing a redesign of our network architecture to better serve you and your expanding business requirements. Our design work includes improvements in our ISP’s, systems, diversity, redundancy, segregation, and capacity.
This notice deals with important maintenance that is being rescheduled. The maintenance for segregation changes needed to make our Data Center operate independent of one another is detailed below. Prior to June, our California, New Jersey and New York Data Centers were tied together in such a way that requires maintenance notice and customer inconvenience for any change in a single one of these facilities. In June we conducted a maintenance in our west coast data center segmenting it from the rest of our data centers. As part of what we did on the west coast we need to further segment the New Jersey and New York data centers from the rest of network backbone. We want to end this legacy practice, and thus have just concluded an exhaustive audit of QualityTech’s use of Internet numbering services.
To break this connection, the next phase of this redesign requires us to assign an independent autonomous system number (ASN) to each of the “connected” data centers. Again this change will allow each facility to function independently of other QualityTech facilities. This design will also allow QualityTech to eliminate our dependence on a number of legacy infrastructure components, paving the way for their eventual retirement.
Rescheduled for Tuesday, September 9th (Previously Notified on 7/1/2008 and 7/29 that this would occur on August 7th)
Activities to be performed: On Tuesday September 9th between 0100-0500 PDT, QualityTech will begin the first of the two maintenance events to renumber the ASN on its East Coast routers. During this maintenance event, customer connectivity will be shifted onto redundant paths while the routers are renumbered.
Potential impact: Although QTS will use all means necessary to minimize any internet service disruption, customer could experience momentary to longer term internet disruption lasting more then fifteen minutes in duration while traffic is failed over to an alternate path. The end of this maintenance event will signify the end of any service disruption. Customers are also encouraged to call into the OSC to check on the status of the maintenance or answer any questions during the maintenance.
Rescheduled for Thursday, September 11th (Previously Notified on 7/1/2008 and 7/29 that this would occur on August 9th)
Activities to be performed: On Thursday September 11 between 0200-0500 PDT, QualityTech will begin the second of two maintenance events to renumber the ASN on its East Coast routers.
Additionally, connectivity issues on external providers are possible while the route changes are propagated across the global Internet route table. Customers who do not have redundant connections to QualityTech will experience an extended outage while the router to which they connect is renumbered and rebooted. The end of this maintenance event will signify the end of any service disruption. Customers are also encouraged to call into the OSC to check on the status or answer any questions during the maintenance.

- FIXED: Folder lists will no longer link to an incorrect folder when a subfolder is created before the parent folder.
